On 12/11/2022 at 1:00AM, a traffic crash occurred within Okeechobee County at SE 5th Street and SW 16th Avenue. The traffic crash consisted of a pick up truck running over a pedestrian, Erika Smith. This resulted in the pedestrian sustaining multiple broken bones/injuries. Ultimately, the victim passed due to her injuries.
As a result of the 911 call, which provided a vehicle description and direction of travel, Deputies were able to intercept the vehicle and apprehend the suspect driver Cameron Runyon, in the area of the EYDC Boys School at 7200 Hwy 441. The driver was charged with fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a traffic crash, and driving under the influence. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Okeechobee County Jail where he later posted bond.
On 12/29/22, after further investigation, a probable cause arrest warrant was issued for the suspect driver. Deputy Gauroniak, along with other Deputies from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, Members of the Criminal Investigations Division, and The Okeechobee City Police Traffic Unit did arrest suspect Cameron Runyon on the following probable cause arrest warrant charges:
Vehicular Manslaughter: Bond set at 100K
Fleeing with disregard for safety of others: Bond set at 25K
DUI: causing death and failure to render aid: Bond set at $250K
Mr. Runyon was arrested and transported to the Okeechobee County Jail without any incident or resistance.
