Florida Sheriffs Association Continues Investing in Florida’s Youth by Awarding 25 Scholarships
Tallahassee, FL (September 6, 2022) – The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) invests in the state of Florida each year by encouraging and rewarding bright, hard-working students whose parents work in a Florida sheriff’s office. This year, FSA has awarded college scholarships to 25 high-achieving students. Fifteen students were awarded the FSA STEM Scholarship for individuals that are pursuing a career in any STEM-related field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math), and 10 were awarded the FSA Scholarship for those that are studying toward a career in law enforcement, corrections, or another criminal justice field.
“The Florida Sheriffs Association has a dedicated strategic goal that focuses on protecting Florida’s future by promoting public support of programs and services focused on the youth of our State,” said Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis, President of the FSA. “The investment we make today in our youth is going to keep the future of public safety on a steady and consistent course.”
To be considered for either scholarship, the student must have a legal guardian that is a full-time employee of a sheriff’s office. The students also must submit a five-page application and an essay. For the STEM Scholarship, the essay must be on why they are passionate about studying their STEM-related field, and the FSA Scholarship essay must highlight how their guardian motivated them to choose law enforcement. The applications and essays were reviewed by a committee of representatives from the Florida Sheriffs Association whose members selected this year’s recipients.
The 2022 recipients include:
Abigail Lynn Garriott - University of Central Florida
Abigail is the daughter of Sergeant Jeremy Garriott of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. She plans to attend the University of Central Florida to major in Political Science with minors in International Relations and Computer Science. Her goal is to work in the field of crime analysis.
Elijah David Heskin - University of Florida
Elijah is the son of Corrections Officer Raymond Heskin of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. He will attend the University of Florida and major in Mechanical Engineering.
Michael Ryan Harrington - Georgia Institute of Technology
Michael is the son of Fire Inspector Gary Harrington of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology where he will major in Engineering. His plans are to work in the field of research and development to discover ways to benefit the common good of society.
Ansleigh Michelle Siren - University of New Orleans
Ansleigh is the daughter of Deputy Sheriff Timothy Siren of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. She will attend the University of New Orleans. While there she will be enrolled in the AFROTC Detachment working for a commission in the United States Air Force. She would like to pursue a career as a combat rescue officer.
Maryland Irena Sambucharan - Daytona State College
Maryland is the daughter of Detention Deputy Reshma Mitchell of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. She is currently attending Daytona State College and studying the field of Computer Science. She plans to earn her doctorate degree in Cybersecurity and Computer Science and aspires to work with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Athena Aphroditi Tsingelis - University of Florida
Athena is the daughter of Crime Lab Technical Leader Petros Tsingelis of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. She attends the University of Florida where she is currently studying biochemistry with plans to earn a PhD in the biomedical field. She would like to eventually run her own research lab to study stem cells.
Isabella Victoria Izquierdo - Florida International University
Isabella is the daughter of Sergeant Grisell Fernandez of the Miami-Dade Police Department. She is attending Florida International University and working towards a degree in Biochemistry. She plans to attend the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and eventually open her own practice.
Hannah Leigh Kinlaw - Jacksonville University
Hannah is the daughter of Officer Robert Kinlaw of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. She attends Jacksonville University and plans to pursue a doctorate in occupational therapy. She would like to specialize in hand therapy and help those with disabilities become more independent.
Sylvie Veillard - University of North Florida
Sylvie is the daughter of Officer Serge Paul of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. She attends the University of North Florida and is working towards a degree in Exercise Science. Her goal is to attend the University of South Florida in the physician’s assistant program.
Brandon Hung-Do Lam - University of Florida
Brandon is the son of Sergeant Hien Lam of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He attends the University of Florida majoring in Engineering. His goal is to be a design or quality engineer for NASA.
Megan Ann Rhodes - University of Central Florida
Megan is the daughter of Sergeant James Rhodes of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. She is currently attending the University of Central Florida majoring in Mathematics. She would like to teach at the middle or high school level and eventually move to a position creating mathematics curriculum for the local school district.
Yaelle Esther Reeve - University of Central Florida
Yaelle is the daughter of Officer Yaara Reeve of the Miami-Dade Police Department. She attends the University of Central Florida, majoring in Biology. She intends to pursue a master's degree in Environmental Forensic Science.
Jayce Wyatt DeSantis - Lake Sumter State College
Jayce is the son of Sergeant Jeffery DeSantis of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. He will attend Lake Sumter State College and hopes to transfer to the University of Central Florida where he will pursue a major in Engineering. His goal is to eventually work for Lockheed Martin.
Darbi Madisyn Eneal Butler - Florida State University
Maddie is the daughter of Sheriff Darby Butler of the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office. She plans to attend the Florida State University where she will earn a nursing degree and then work as a cardiac nurse. Maddie would eventually like to become a cardiovascular surgeon.
Savannah Grace Woods - North Carolina State
Savannah is the daughter of Deputy Robert Woods of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. She will attend North Carolina State where she aspires to enter the college of engineering to pursue a degree in either mechanical or nuclear engineering, or a renewable energy field of study.
Mallory Bell - University of West Florida
Mallory is the daughter of Community Relations-Neighborhood Specialist Ronald Rivera of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. She plans to attend the University of West Florida and work towards a degree in Criminal Justice.
Aryanna Aurelie Hyppolite - University of Pennsylvania
Aryanna is the daughter of Staff Accountant Franck Hyppolite of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. She plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania and eventually attend law school, where her focus will be immigration and human rights.
Haley Logan Glazier - University of Delaware
Haley is the daughter of Lieutenant William Glazier of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. She plans to attend the University of Delaware, where she will earn a bachelor's degree. Following graduation, she will enter the field of law enforcement.
Cody Daniel DeJarnett - West Virginia University
Cody is the son of Lieutenant Shane DeJarnett of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. He is attending West Virginia University pursuing degrees in Criminology and Political Science.
Olivia Kelly Wingard - Florida State University
Olivia is the daughter of Sergeant Jeffrey Wingard of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. She is attending the Florida State University where she is seeking a degree in criminology.
Teagan Alexander - Florida Southwestern State College
Teagan is the son of Deputy Stephen Alexander of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. He is attending Florida Southwestern State College while also employed as a Community Service Deputy. Following graduation, he plans to attend the academy to become a certified law enforcement officer.
Bradley W Bartlett - Valencia College
Bradley is the son of Lieutenant William Bartlett of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Bradley has participated in the Orange County Explorer Program for several years and has worked his way up to Lieutenant. He plans to attend Valencia College and major in Criminal Justice.
Morgan Leigh Brooks - University of Central Florida
Morgan is the daughter of Master Deputy Kristian Brooks of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. She has been a member of the explorer post for several years where she worked her way up to the rank of lieutenant. She attends the University of Central Florida and plans to earn a degree in Psychology. Following graduation, she would like a career in law enforcement.
Matthew Daniel Coleman - Florida International University
Matthew is the son of Deputy Kevin Coleman of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He attends Florida International University and is pursuing a degree in Information Technology. He would like to work in law enforcement using his skills with computer forensics.
Alexandria Elizabeth Mahla - Barry University School of Law
Alexa is the daughter of Lieutenant Alexandria Mahla of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. She will attend the Barry University School of Law where she will work towards her Juris Doctorate. After graduation, she would like to use her degree in the field of criminal law.
