- Balloon sinuplasty is a relatively new procedure.
- Of patients who receive the procedure, more than 95% see improvements of their symptoms.
- Balloon sinuplasty can improve other things, such as quality of sleep.
Aull said this is, in part, due to a lack of sleep caused by chronic sinusitis symptoms that can lead to further complications down the road. In fact, the National Center for Biotechnology Information reported that 60% to 75% of chronic sinusitis sufferers admitted to having a poor quality of sleep.
"We know that chronic sinus disease worsens sleep," Aull said. "We also know that bad sleep is horrible for the mind. We know that if you're not getting a good night's sleep, your risk for Alzheimer's disease starts to go through the roof. A small amount of sleep is a huge problem. Helping your sinuses can help a myriad of different things."
According to Healthline, a relatively new procedure called balloon sinuplasty — approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2005 — has been known to clear blocked sinuses. Balloon sinuplasty, also known as the "smart sinus" procedure, has increased in popularity since it has lower risks and shorter recovery times compared to the traditional sinus surgery, according to Good RX.
Fierce Healthcare reported more than 95% of the more than 1,000 patients who had the procedure done had improved symptoms. In addition, none of the patients reported experiencing any adverse side effects. According to Sleep Review Magazine, most patients reported being able to sleep and breath easier, plus had reduced or eliminated facial pain within days of the procedure.
