PRAYER
The Chaplain, the Reverend Margaret Grun Kibben, offered the following prayer:
Our God, our help in ages past, we give You thanks for the life of Representative Alcee L. Hastings, friend and colleague, judge and leader in service to You and to this country, for many years.
For the shelter You provided him, that he would, in his lifelong pursuit of civil rights, find triumph in the face of adversity, hope in the pursuit of equal justice, and Your sufficient grace in his efforts to advance respect for all humanity, we give You our heartfelt thanks.
Like an ever-rolling stream, time has borne this Your son, our brother, away. But may we not forget his compassionate, perhaps flamboyant, fighting spirit. And in these days and the days to come, be our guard in grief in sure and certain hope that Alcee Hastings now rests from his labors in Your everlasting arms.
For giving us the gift of such a man with whom we have been privileged to know, we are grateful to You.
We pray in the abiding love of Your holy name.
Amen.
